Discovering the Saints

Behold, I say unto you that it is not expedient in me that ye should translate any more until ye shall go to the Ohio, and this because of the enemy and for your sakes. D&C 37:1

On December 30, 1830 Joseph Smith received a revelation directing the Saints who lived in New York state to permanently leave their homes and move to join the growing number of members in Ohio. The revelation was announced to the members a few days later and they were promised that they would receive God’s “law & there you shall be endowed with power from on high” (D&C 38).

The revelation was received in response to growing persecution in New York juxtaposed with the growing number of believers in Ohio. This would mark the beginning of the westward movement of the church that would ultimately end with Brigham Young leading the Saints into the Salt Lake Valley.
